True Life... Big Girl Issues

Like a good little blogger (and bad little broke college student) I decided to sign up for Stitch Fix. So I hop over, fill out my email and contact info. Plug in the info for the initial survey. And get this.

I have blogged once before about being a bigger girl and fashion and like it or not I am going to do it again! Now it is not secret that I neither own nor could wear half of the outfits I dream up. But what aggravates me is when I don't even have a chance to try.

And I get it, SF is a new small company, still growing and not yet able to service everyone. Fine. But it just annoys me. I wanna be cute like everyone else!! So for those of you out there who have struggled with finding clothes in a skinny world, I want to share some of my tips.

Bras
Now it is no secret. I have big boobs. 38DDD/38F to be exact. And lemme tell you - bras that big are not pretty. At least until I stumbled across Lane Bryant. #truelove. They have cute and big bras - lots of prints, and lace, and shapes and sizes! Bonus part is once or twice a year they have these huge Buy 1 Get 1 Free sales. As a broke college student these are like christmas for me. (double bonus... they have one going on now, so you should check it out!)

Shirts
After bras, my second biggest clothing problem has been finding shirts. If it fits in the stomach (which is no to tiny either, but more on that later) then the girls are poppin out! If it fits in the tatas then it's swallowing me whole everywhere else. This has been a bit of an easier fix then the bras. For a while I was trying to be like everyone else and shop at Forever 21 and such, but nothing ever fit exactly right. Then I discovered the Target V-Neck Tee. Not even going to lie I have about 15 in varying colors. They are great! Toss on a scarf or cardi and instant outfit.... At least until I re-discovered Old Navy. I have a very well documented love affair with ON. Their shirts are soft and loose in the right places and long (big bonus) and comfy and most important cute! I must own 20 or so different tops from them, and they all fit! If you ever dismissed ON, I would go try them again, their current style is straight from heaven for those of us packing a little (or lot) extra.

Pants
I have an on and off relationship with pants. Not like I take them off at random moments, but my pants victories vary on a year to year basis. For a while I thought skinny jeans would mean death to a girl with medium hips, no butt, and a big stomach. Quite the opposite. I love them! I was having good luck for awhile at Target, until they redid their sizing system with like 12839 different types of "fits". But luck for me, this was right around the beginning of my current ON phase. Now in the short span of 6 months I am the proud owner of a red, purple, teal, polka-dot khaki, plain khaki, sea foam cords, bright green, black, and grey leopard ON "rockstar" jeans. They also have "flirt", "diva", "dreamer" and "sweatheart" styles for different fits. Each one targets a different area, and they are yet another reason why ON deserves almost 1/4 of my paycheck every few months.

Dresses
I had to order my prom dress 2 sizes larger to accommodate for my boobs. I could have made purses for a small village with the remaining fabric. I still have some trouble finding the prefect balance in dresses, either too much boob, too much fabric, or ugly patterns have prevented me from having the 80% dress wardrobe that I have always dreamed about. Luckily I found a handy solution. Affordable custom sized dresses from Eshakti. I received one gorgeous dress from them in the past and have another on the way! But in the mean time I wanted to invite you to go try them out for yourselves. Their dresses are 100% customizable - right down to the neckline, straps/sleeves, and length! Just hop on over and use code LALALISTS to get 20% off when you shop at eShakti between now and March 10th. And stay tuned for my awesome new dress!

Do you have any shopping difficulties and where have you found clothes that work for you?

I could have written this post. I always buy bras from Lane Bryant. They were my exclusive clothing source, until their prices went sky high, and my bank account hit rock bottom. I also have a real problem with pants. I am short, and for some reason, a lot of clothing designers don't realize that fat people can be short too... I have been reading a lot about Eshakti lately, and I really want to try them out!

I LOVE JCrew. I HATE that they don't size for plus size women. I can fit into some of their XL's but not often. Retailers should smarten up... It's difficult for plus size women to find great quality in current trends and if they would just expand their size options they would increase their revenue. I mean it's an issue when JCrew has sale items and the majority of sizes left over are xxs and xs. I would think they would get the hint! Thank goodness for Old Navy, GAP, and Target!!!

Love love love J-crew, but yeah, as a broke college student my normal response is more like "What is this 'shopping' you speak of?"

Thanks for the tip about lane bryant. They now ship to the uk! I've always had problems with my boobs, even with bra I can range from an E - GG. I hate being plus size and not many shops deal with plus size. I hate when the biggest size is a 14. Makes me want to cry! :(

Thanks for some website names!

38ddd - sing it sister!!! I too suffer from HUGE boobs. And it's doubly annoying...as the bras are the only thing from Lane Bryant I fit into, since i'm not even really plus sized. Just my boobs are.

I filled out that Stitch Fix survey and was also wildly disappointed by that damn message. I am pretty sure my comment back to them was a rant saying plus size women deserve to have cute options too. Thanks for your post!

Thanks for this post. I am also a broke college student who has been having trouble finding clothes that are cute and fit. Specially in the bra area. I will have to check out Lane Bryant I know their boots are the only ones that will fit me right. Thanks again:)

Ugh, I hear you! I went to a specialty bra shop this week, as in, they specialize in fitting you for your size and the woman was as dismissive as that Stitch Fix response. I think she said I was too broad for a small cup, or something to that effect. How rude!

I'm with Carly - eshakti is AWESOME!! I am short and very pear shaped so I had issues with pants ALL THE TIME.

I love LB bras. I used to work their and would always take advantage during semi-annual sale. We just had a location here close and all their bras were 70% off. If they'd had more in my size and the style I like I would've bought them all.

I have a large chest too - but I've never though to look at Lane Bryant! Bra shopping is nooo fun.

Thanks for your post! I agree that sometimes bigger women don't have as much of an option in clothing and if they do it is not always the most fashionable. I haven't been to ON in a while, but I might have to give them another chance. Also LB bras are the BEST... I used to always be self-conscious about having "mom" or "grandma" style bras because my boobs are so big, but after discovering LB I was thrilled that I can feel cute and still get the support that I need for these monsters lol

Hello,
Great post and I can totally relate as a fellow busty and petite girl. It's hard to find a good fit. I am anxious to try eshakti thanks for the discount code.
